1940 - 2020 Mainland Chinese film with noir-like elements personal criteria

This dataset was compiled as part of a practice-based PhD project on the cross-cultural transplantation of film noir, with a particular focus on mainland Chinese cinema. To build a preliminary understanding of how noir-like elements have been adopted and transformed in local contexts, I gathered information on films produced between 1940 and 2020. The list was created by consolidating entries from three existing Chinese film corpora, supplemented by online searches and selective viewing. The final compilation reflects personal criteria in identifying noir-like qualities, such as narrative atmosphere, stylistic features, and character archetypes. It serves as a reference point for mapping the contours of Chinese noir sensibilities in contemporary scholarship and creative practice.
