Macroinvertebrate assemblages in a tropical urban river, Puerto Rico: diversity, temporal variability, and effects of non-native fishes Vamery González Hernández (vgonzal5@ncsu.edu)Alonso Ramírez (alonso.ramirez@ncsu.edu)North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina, United States Project summaryWe evaluated the relative influence of hydrological conditions and non-native fish predation on macroinvertebrate assemblages and benthic resources (i.e., algal biomass and benthic organic matter) in the main stem of the Río Piedras, an urban watershed in Puerto Rico. Using a Before-After-Control-Impact design across three stream reaches, we sampled macroinvertebrates and benthic resources during a high-flow period in March 2022 and post-fish removal during a low-flow period in June 2022. Non-native cichlids (Amphilophus spp.) and Sailfin Catfish (Pterygoplicthys spp.) abundances were suppressed in the manipulated reaches. Total macroinvertebrate abundance, biomass, benthic organic matter, and chlorophyll a were driven primarily by temporal changes in flow regimes, with increases during the low-flow period compared to the high-flow period; and non-native fish removal had no significant effects on these variables. However, fish removal created significant shifts in macroinvertebrate assemblage composition, primarily driven by the relative abundances of Chironomidae dipterans and Americabaetis mayflies.
