The project aimed to screen for microorganisms that exhibit plastic degradation ability from a soil-plant system enriched with microplastics, and further utilise multiomic approaches (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics) to decipher the underlying genetic repertoires that facilitate the degradation process. Fusarium vanettenii was the key fungi that was isolated and experimental tests showed its ability to adhere to, colonise, decolourise and depolymerise polyurethane (PU), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polyvinyly chloride (PVC). Moreover, the fungus, F. vanettenii exhibited the capability to grow on solid nutrient culture media with impanil solution and polyethylene glycol-400 as the sole carbon sources.
