Genomic insights into multidrug-resistant bacteria: Emergence of mcr-1.1 in Escherichia coli, blaKPC-2 in Klebsiella pneumoniae and Serratia marcescens in clinical settings in China

We are uploading the supplementary data of our study, which dives deep into the genomic makeup of five multidrug-resistant bacteria from Anhui Province, China, including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Serratia marcescens. In these strains, we found an E. coli strain (EC385) carrying five plasmids and a critical resistance gene mcr1.1 and several other ARGs. Then, three K. pneumoniae strains (KP304, KP297, and KP69), also carried multiple plasmids and genes driving resistance to multiple antibiotics including meropenem. In this study, we also identified a S. marcescens (SM66) carrying blaKPC-2 gene. This study indicates the potential of emergence of critical resistance genes in hospital settings in China in different bacterial species with pathogenic potential and can play an important role in further spread of such resistance genes beyond the clinical settings such as environment.
