Dataset and coding materials for "Mapping the Field: Design Choices, Engagement, and Learning Outcomes in XR Cultural Heritage Experiences"

This dataset supports the scoping review “Mapping the Field: Design Choices, Engagement, and Learning Outcomes in XR Cultural Heritage Experiences.” The deposit contains the bibliographic list of 385 included studies, the coded extraction dataset, the full-text exclusion list with standardized reason codes, the title/abstract and full-text screening codebooks, the complete search strategies for Scopus, Web of Science, IEEE Xplore, and ACM Digital Library, a data dictionary, an analysis README, and the dataset license. The review maps XR technologies, devices, interaction paradigms, narrative strategies, gamification elements, social and multi-user features, engagement constructs, learning outcomes, measurement instruments, inferential testing, effect-size reporting, and recurring design–outcome patterns in archaeological and cultural heritage studies. Database searches were conducted during June and July 2026. A total of 1,372 records were identified, 890 unique records were screened, 620 full-text reports were assessed, and 385 studies were included in the final synthesis. Article abstracts and keywords are not included in order to avoid reproducing copyrighted publisher content. Reviewer identities are anonymized in the public dataset.
