During the MAESTRO field experiment, the French ATR 42 environmental research aircraft of SAFIRE was dedicated to the exploration of the cloud amount and of the subcloud layer. The SAFIRE ATR42 aircraft was equipped with a 5-hole nose radome, and several temperature and humidity sensors, for measurements of the three wind components, temperature and humidity at fast rate (25 Hz). For this data set, only the highest quality instruments were used. High frequency measurements allow the estimation of turbulent moments and the study of turbulence structure of the subcloud layer, as well as the fine thermodynamical structure of the cloud base level.
All processing details are provided in the associated datapaper. The turbulence moments are calculated on stabilized legs after segmentation in most homogeneous segments of about 27 km, (i) after detrending and (ii) after high-pass filtering at cut-off wavelength of approximately 5 km. For all stabilized legs of all processed flights, a set of turbulence statistics are available, as well as high rate fluctuations of temperature, water vapor mixing ratio and the 3 wind components, in the streamwise and geographical frame of reference.
The dataset includes three kinds of files:
Turbulent moments, calculated over each segment, from filtered and detrended series. Those are supplied in netcdf files, with one file per flight.
Fluctuations over each segment are also made available (detrended and high-pass filtered series). One file per segment.
Leg scale calibrated time series. One flight per leg.
