We report that the excision-replication-packaging (ERP) program of the experimentally favored Salmonella phage P22 tsc heat-inducible mutant does not occur in the wild-type P22, which follows the replication-packaging-excision (RPE) program. We found that P22 tsc229 excised early after induction, but P22 delayed excision to just before it was detrimental to phage production. While both phages produced normal titers, only P22 was capable of lateral transduction
