Gene database of Staphylococcus aureus NCTC 8325

Staphylococcus aureus is a round, Gram-positive bacterium that inhabits the skin and upper respiratory tract of human body. A commensal in most cases, but which can also become an opportunistic pathogen, S. aureus is an important clinical bacterium particularly in cases of strains resistant to methicillin (also known as methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, MRSA). This work sought to provide a gene database of all genes in the sequenced genome of S. aureus NCTC 8325 (Genbank accession number: NCBI Reference Sequence: NC_007795.1). Using an in-house MATLAB algorithm, the Genbank genome file was parsed to reveal gene name, gene function and gene sequence of all genes in the genome of this Gram-positive bacterium. Information obtained should be useful for various microbiology and clinical research applications seeking, for example, to better understand the mechanisms underpinning the virulence of S. aureus under different clinical settings.
