IMPACTS OF AGILE METHODOLOGIES APPLIED TO PROJECT MANAGEMENT IN THE OIL & GAS INDUSTRY IN NEW ZEALAND

This article examines the impacts of Agile methodologies on the oil and gas industry, focusing on reducing time and cost overruns while enhancing project performance through iterative progress assessments. A systematic literature review (SLR) of forty-five articles and industry consultation identified 114 factors affecting project success and Agile implementation, categorised into fourteen themes. Data analysis techniques such as Pareto analysis and centrality measures revealed complex interrelationships among these factors, leading to the identification of ten crucial elements. Organisational culture and soft skills, including effective leadership and adaptability to change, appeared as key factors impacting team dynamics and the implementation of agile practices. Agile practices, effective project planning, and a clear scope are key factors that significantly impact project success. This study is the first to explore factors influencing the implementation of Agile methods in non-IT sectors, offering insights to enhance industry performance through these interactions. The theoretical implications include expanding knowledge about agile practices and their application in oil and gas projects. This will support industry professionals and academia with the knowledge to assess agile implementation and improve project performance.
