We investigated the prevalence and origin of LA-MRSA CC398 in Danish horses in 2015. These isolates were compared with other Danish LA-MRSA CC398 isolates from pigs and humans using whole genome phylogenetic analysis. The analysis showed that horses carry both equine- and porcine-adapted LA-MRSA CC398 genotypes. The equine-adapted genotype was identified at a very low frequency among LA-MRSA CC398 isolates from the national MRSA database, accounting for only 0.2% of all LA-MRSA CC398 infections during 2004-2015.
