Comparative analysis of VHF radar Doppler velocity and neutral wind velocity from meteor radar

The very high frequency coherent scatter radar can obtain the radial velocity of field-aligned irregularities. Below altitude of 100 km, this velocity is thought to be dominated by the neutral wind, so it is possible to infer the wind velocity from the radial velocity. By comparing velocity data from the very high frequency radar and the meteor radar at the Qujing station in 2023, this paper analyzes the feasibility of measuring wind velocity by using the very high frequency radar. The results show that, except for the insufficient observations of the very high frequency radar from 10 LT to 17 LT, the velocities from very high frequency radar and the meteor radar have similar annual variations and diurnal variations. When the time coverage is higher than 1/3, the radial velocity observations are less affected by noise and have a good correlation with the neutral wind velocities. At the same time, the daily maximum southward and northward velocities of the very high frequency radar have a similar trend with the observation results of the meteor radar, demonstrating the potential of the velocity from very high frequency for the study of atmospheric winds. The extremely high time resolution and unique height coverage range of the very high frequency radar can form a complement to traditional measurement methods.
