Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) has been an endemic infection in Turkey, especially in southeastern Anatolia. The leading causative agent is Leishmania tropica, while cases of L. infantum has also been reported. Molecular studies conducted in the last decade identified autochthonous CL cases due to L. major and L. donovani in Turkey. Previous reports indicated that Leishmania RNA virus (LRV), which is found in various Leishmania isolates worldwide may be involved in the pathogenesis of CL cases through the induction of immunologic reactions of the host and sometimes causing resistant, larger lesions. To identify the cause of the clinical variation in CL cases by L. major in Turkey, we sought the presence of LRV with PCR Leishmania isolates from different regions of Turkey.
