资源简介:
Cellulose is a versatile and abundant material traditionally sourced from plants. The methods for optimal extraction led to significant freshwater consumption and the use of synthetic chemicals. To address these issues, alternative sources of cellulose production are being explored. Our research aims to develop a sustainable alternative to produce cellulose by harnessing the power of microbes and using abundant ocean water sources. We have successfully achieved this major milestone by growing it by 50% solution of ocean water with promising results and are currently investigating its ensuing morphology. The structure of the cellulose formation also plays a key factor in its material properties and subsequent product applications. Leveraging the ID16A beamline for synchrotron X-ray tomography experiments offers a promising way to investigate the internal structure of microbial cellulose fibers. Additionally, these results will provide key insights into morphological variations of the nanofibers produced in different ocean water concentrations and form the basis to the complementary material testing experiments. By deciphering the intricate relationship between morphology and properties, we aim to unveil novel applications for this biopolymer in alignment with evolving industrial requirements.
