资源简介:
Database of Peralkaline Volcanic Rocks in Chihuahua
This dataset compiles geological and geochemical information on peralkaline volcanic rocks predominantly located in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, with a few references to occurrences in the United States. It includes 125 samples and 92 variables, and was compiled using data from the Mexican Geological Survey (SGM) and scientific literature.
📂 Structure and Content of the Dataset
The data is organized into several key categories:
Sample Identification:
Sample ID, source of data, locality, and state.
Availability of Analytical Data:
Indication of whether major element analyses are complete.
Geochemistry:
Major oxides: SiO₂, TiO₂, Al₂O₃, Fe₂O₃, MgO, Na₂O, K₂O, etc.
Trace and rare earth elements (REEs): Ce, Nb, Zr, La, Th, U, Rb, Sr, among others.
Some elements are missing in most samples (e.g., Er, Gd, Tm).
Location and Geological Mapping:
Latitude and longitude (available for 89 samples).
Geological map references (1:50,000 and 1:250,000 scale).
Petrographic and Petrologic Classification:
Rock types: mostly peralkaline rhyolites, some comendites and trachytes.
Classification and compositional criteria are clearly indicated.
Mineralogical and Normative Data:
Includes normative mineral percentages (Q, Or, Ab, An, Ne, Ol, Di, Il, Mt, Ap, Hem, etc.), potentially calculated with CIPW norms.
📌 Notable Findings
Most samples are classified as high-silica peralkaline rhyolites with SiO₂ > 75%, indicating evolved magmas.
Several samples exhibit enrichment in Zr, Nb, Rb, and Th, suggesting an intraplate, post-collisional or extensional magmatic affinity.
Trace element data, though incomplete, shows potential for Rare Earth Element (REE) enrichment in some localities.
The petrographic classifications, along with geochemical signatures, support the interpretation of alkaline to peralkaline magmatic evolution related to the southern extent of the Rio Grande Rift Province.
🔬 Interpretation and Applications
Geological significance: The dataset provides evidence of differentiated alkaline magmatism in northern Mexico and supports tectonomagmatic models of the extended Rio Grande Rift.
Economic relevance: The presence of REEs, U, Zr, and Th highlights potential for strategic mineral exploration.
Archaeological applications: The geochemical characterization can help correlate volcanic sources of obsidian used in northern Mexico’s archaeological contexts.
Data origin: Gathered through a combination of field sampling and laboratory analysis by governmental agencies (SGM) and academic researchers.
This dataset is suitable for advanced geological research in petrology, economic geology, tectonics, and geoarchaeology, and forms a critical base for building models of magmatic processes and resource potential in the region.
