A method of making gel sheets comprising the steps of: Providing an amount of fibrous batting; Introducing an amount of an impermeable material (65) to separate the amount of fibrous batting and rolling to a fiber roll preform (60) having a plurality of fibrous layers; Infusing an amount of catalyzed sol (62) into the fiber roll preform (60) and gelling the catalyzed sol in the fiber roll preform to form a gel sheet roll.
