The increasing use of whole genome sequencing has proven itself as highly valuable for infectious disease surveillance. In the case of diphtheria, sequencing of Austrian C. diphtheriae isolates has provided information on strain variability, antibiotic resistance, and genetic determinants of diphtheria toxin production. Such detailed data allow to precisely assess the threat posed by each strain, and therefore to take appropriate actions.
