*This definition is intended to capture the way in which the word episode is used, whereby intermittent fever bouts, within a period of continual high parasitaemia characteristically lasting a few weeks (Figure 1), are likely to be considered to be connected. This introduces ambiguities because patients, care givers, and data analysts may disagree about which events are part of the same episode.
#It is debatable whether co-inoculated but genetically distinct parasites should be considered part of the same infection.
