The experiment conducted for this dataset was a sweep net capture of insects and all other surrounding invertebrates in two different specified areas. This was conducted by two group members one did the transect measurement and sweep capture while the second person counted the insects and recorded them. The specified location was adjacent areas within the grassland of York University close to the University pond. The location was divided into a mowed and non-mowed area indicated by whether or not university staff has lawn mowed the area in question. In the mowed area our team measured at 30 feet distance each trial and the target area was always south of the previous trial, 100% on the mowed land, and never overlapping the previous trial area. As for the non-mowed area we began at a random point using 30 feet distance each trial and the target area was always north of the previous trial, 100% on the non-mowed land, and never overlapping the previous trial area. For the mow area the sweep net was lightly brushed back and forth as close to the ground as possible for the distance of the transect tape. For the non-mow area the sweep net was brushed back and forth approximately chest level due to the height of the surrounding plants for the distance of the transect tape. At the end of each sweep the captured specimen were tallied based on the closest common name or scientific classification without using any taxonomy references. All specimens captured in the net were recorded including insects and non-insects. Five trials were done per area with a total of 10 trials. All specimens were released back to the wild after each trial.
本数据集配套的实验采用扫网采集法,收集两处指定地块内的昆虫及周边所有无脊椎动物样本。实验由两名组员协作完成:一人负责沿样带开展测量与扫网采集工作,另一人则对捕获生物进行计数并记录相关信息。 实验地块位于约克大学(York University)校园草地内,毗邻校园池塘,被划分为修剪草坪区块与未修剪草坪区块,区分依据为校工是否对该区域实施过草坪修剪作业。 修剪草坪区块的每次采样均间隔30英尺,且目标采样区域始终位于上一次采样区域的南侧,完全处于修剪过的草坪范围内,绝不与前一次采样区域发生重叠。未修剪草坪区块则以随机点位作为起始点,每次采样同样间隔30英尺,目标采样区域始终位于上一次采样区域的北侧,完全处于未修剪草坪范围内,且不会与前一次采样区域重叠。 针对修剪草坪区块,扫网需贴近地面来回轻扫,覆盖整条样带尺的长度;未修剪草坪区块因周边植株高度较高,扫网需在约胸部高度来回扫动,同样覆盖样带尺的全长。每次扫网作业结束后,无需查阅分类学参考资料,仅依据最通用的俗名或科学分类对捕获标本进行计数归类。本次实验记录了所有捕获的样本,涵盖昆虫与非昆虫类无脊椎动物。 本次实验每个区域各开展五次采样,总计完成十次采样作业。每次采样结束后,所有捕获的标本均被放归野外。
