Number of specialist medical practitioners in Italy 2012-2022

In Italy, the number of specialist medical practitioners gradually increased over time. Nonetheless, several studies suggest that there could be a shortage of physicians in the future. This lack may be attributable to the decline of places available for medical residency trainings. Between 2014 and 2023, the number of retired physicians was expected to exceed the number of practicing doctors in many medical specialties. The gap was forecasted to be remarkable especially for pediatricians. Pediatricians and General Practitioners Nonetheless the number of pediatricians employed in Italy fluctuated between 2001 and 2021. The same cannot be said for general practitioners, whose number decreased from 47,027 to 40,250 GPs, during the same time range. Comparison to number of physicians in Europe Although this may be true, Italy is among the European countries with the highest number of practicing physicians, since that, in 2020, it was second only to Germany and Russia. In addition, Italy was the first European country for number of pediatricians.
