Photograph of the high Sierra Mountains at Cottonwood Lake, San Fernando Valley, California, ca.1930. A stream zig-zags through the snow-covered landscape, which is virgin snow and rocks almost exclusively until just before the second peak of the mountains in the background, where trees can be seen lining the foothills. The lake from which the stream comes constituted San Fernando Valley's water supply.
