we present a dataset obtained from a sampling methodology based on the connection of a microplastic sampling device of our own design to the pump-underway ship intake system of a research vessel (rv). the method has been proved cost effective, highly versatile and accurate, and able to sample particles down to 50μm from opportunity platforms, thus contributing to an emerging area of study, and particularly helpful to increase monitoring effort and reported data, and therefore serving as a valuable aid for the implementation of the marine strategy framework directive (msfd).sampling was performed in three consecutive oceanographic campaigns in subtropical ne atlantic over a year, repeating the same procedure, retrieving subsurface waters (- 4 m depth) while on navigation and while on coastal and oceanic stations. microplastic particles were found in the total stations and transects sampled. fibres (64.42%) were predominant over fragments (35.58%), being the concentration values over the data reported in other areas in the atlantic.
