In the Long-Term Evolution Experiment with HIV-1, HIV-1 NL4-3 was passaged on two different human T-cell cultures, MT-2 and MT-4, for 240 to 300 passages, in eight (mostly) independent lines, and eight derived lines, corresponding approximately 400 to 500 generations.Four of the derived lines underwent a change in environment: they evolved on one cell type for 50 passages and on the other for 220 successive passages.This experiment constitutes the longest evolutionary experiment with HIV to-date, lasting 2 to 3 years of evolution.
