Woodlot Dataset 3
Method: Group members: Afra, Maham, Farinaz and Sana The purpose of this experiment with respect to Woodlot dataset 3 is to become familiar with sampling tools such as the transect tape and learning techniques for collecting field data such as distance between trees, circumference of trees and subsequently the diameter at breast height and determining tree condition. This data could be used to determine tree conditions near the edge of the woodlot in comparison to the centre of the woodlot. I predict that trees found on the edge of the woodlot receive more sunlight than those found in centre of the woodlot. Thus, I hypothesize that the adult trees near the edge of the woodlot would possess healthier and non decaying bark and a large canopy (abundant leaves) whereas adult trees located closer to the centre of the woodlot would possess decaying bark and a smaller canopy. Data collection for Woodlot dataset 3 took place at the Northwest corner of York University's Keele campus in a Woodlot on September 26, 2014 from 3:00pm to 4:00pm by Sana Jamal and Maham Anees. Sana both recorded and took measurements while, Maham solely took the measurements. At the time of data collection, it was sunny with very little cloud cover and wind. The temperature at this time was about 23 degrees Celsius. The transect tape was placed on the ground at the edge of the woodlot and extended approximately 30 meters in a straight line to centre of the woodlot. One adult tree was selected at random from the edge of the woodlot and subsequent adult trees were selected along the transect tape placed on the ground. Overall, 10 pairs of adult trees were selected giving a total of 20 trees. The distance between a pair of adult trees was measured in centimeter using a transect tape where each distance measurement was taken from the base of each tree. The diameter at breast height (dbh) of each tree was determine by measuring the circumference of each adult tree in centimeter using a transect tape and applying the formula, diameter= circumference/ π. Lastly, the condition of the tree was determined by visually observing the tree with the eyes. The condition of the tree was based on a scale where, 0 = dead , 1 = living, 2 = huge green canopy.
