Perceived velocity loss as a practical alternative to device-based velocity loss thresholds in strength-trained individuals

Training with velocity loss thresholds (VLT) is an effective method for controlling strength training volume and quality but typically requires costly equipment and additional effort due to sensor and data handling. Hence, this study investigated (a) viability of estimated VLTs based on barbell velocity perception and (b) whether a single session with VLT feedback can improve estimation accuracy. Twenty-seven strength trained participants (n (female, male) = 13, 14; 26±7 years of age; 177±9 cm height; 76.9±13.8 kg mass; 79.5±28.0 kg one repetition maximum (1RM) bench press), without prior velocity-based training (VBT) experience, completed 4 sessions. Session 1 consisted of a familiarization and 1RM assessment for the bench press. In sessions 2 and 4, participants completed 3 sets with 80% of their 1RM and signalled when they estimated a velocity loss of ³20% (20%VLT). In session 3, participants received VLT feedback.
