Replication Data for: Post-Cold War autocratization: Trends and patterns of regime change opposite to democratization

The so-called third wave of democratization is over and scholars are increasingly alert to the apparently growing number of regime changes in the opposite direction. However, there is little agreement concerning how many distinct forms these processes can take, and even less systematic cross-regional analysis of the phenomenon, which diminishes our ability to seize its actual import. Accordingly, this article pursues a twofold goal. First, we present a framework for the analysis of the processes opposite to democratization. Specifically, we build on the notion of ‘autocratization’, identify similarities and differences between the various forms it can take, and catalogue how it can happen. Second, we provide new data on post-Cold War cases across the world and use these data to map the prevailing trends. The analysis confirms the increasing empirical relevance of the phenomenon, and reveals the existence of a few geographical and historical patterns in the forms and modes of contemporary autocratization.所谓的第三波民主化浪潮已然终结，学界日益警觉到反向政体转型的数量正明显攀升。然而，学界对于这类进程可呈现多少种不同形式尚未达成共识，针对该现象的系统性跨区域分析更是寥寥无几，这削弱了我们把握其真实意涵的能力。有鉴于此，本文旨在达成双重研究目标。其一，我们构建了一套用于分析民主化反向进程的分析框架；具体而言，我们以“威权化（autocratization）”概念为依托，辨析其各类表现形式的异同，并对其发生路径展开分类梳理。其二，我们收集了全球冷战后案例的全新数据集，并借助该数据集描绘当前的主流发展趋势。本研究证实了该现象在经验层面的相关性正不断提升，并揭示出当代威权化的形式与路径存在若干地理与历史层面的典型模式。
