Meaning of School Streets: At the beginning and the end of the school day, the street is closed for half an hour for motorized traffic. A volunteer puts a fence at the beginning and end of the street. Cars can't get in, but cyclists and pedestrians can. Cars that were already parked in the street are allowed to leave the street. When the gates are gone, everyone can enter the street again.
