Typewritten transcripts of evidence of the above inquiry, conducted by J.B. Scobie, S.M. The set is incomplete; pages 11-958 and 2863-2912 are missing. On 4 February 1938, the Royal North Shore Hospital was gazetted as being included under the provisions of the Public Hospitals Act, 1929-1937. This repealed the previous Royal North Shore Hospital Act of Incorporation, 1910. Under the Public Hospitals Act, the number of directors of the hospital was reduced from 27 to 12 - 5 members being appointed by the Hospitals Commission. At the first meeting of the new board on 21 April 1938, the current system of administration of the hospital was temporarily adopted. On 4 May 1939 the Hospitals Commission, in pursuance of Section 11B of the Public Hospitals Act, 1929-1937, delegated Mr. J.B. Scobie. S.M. "power to make and conduct an inquiry and investigation with respect to the administration, management and activities of the Royal North Shore Hospital of Sydney". The inquiry hearings were held from 9 May to 29 August, and the report and recommendations were ordered by the Legislative Assembly to be printed on 17 October 1939 (New South Wales Parliamentary Papers, 1938-39-40, Joint Vol. 5 pp. 803-50). As a direct result of the Report, an Administrator, Mr. C.J. Watt, Under Secretary, Department of Public Health, was appointed to control the hospital temporarily on 17 October 1939. The new Board of Directors was gazetted on 12 April 1940, and held their first meeting on 24 April 1940.(3/2384-86). 3 boxes.
