In this panel, archivists specializing in time-based born-digital workflows will discuss their use cases involving the span of collections processing practices, from “best” to the practical reality of “good enough”. These use cases will highlight situations wherein video quality, subject matter, file size and stakeholder expectations play decisive roles impacting preservation workflows. From these experiences, the panel will put forth suggestions for tiered preservation decision making, recognizing that not all files should necessarily be treated alike.
The goal of this presentation is to discuss real-world workflows, taking into account institutional culture, policy, digital storage, staffing, and tools. The panel emphasizes the ‘art’ in the science of digital video preservation by exploring alternatives to the idea of one-size-fits-all ‘best practice’ recommendations. The panelists will engage with each other throughout to discuss how their different approaches towards digital video preservation have been impacted by the needs and capabilities of their institution, and how one organization’s best practice might be inappropriate or impractical for another. The goal of the panelists is to demystify the process of preserving born-digital video, and explore the role that creativity can play in developing policies and workflows that are ‘good enough’.
