In 2011, Shiga toxin 2 (Stx2)-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) of the rare serotype O104:H4 caused one of the world’s largest outbreaks of hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome. The causative strains of this pathogen may have evolved from enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC). We determined the whole genome sequence of an food associated STEC O104:H4 strain isolated during the outbreak in Germany.
