Ambient temperature storage in DESS supports molecular studies of benzimidazole resistance from canine hookworm eggs

This study aimed to evaluate the use of DESS solution for preserving canine faecal samples at ambient temperature for molecular analysis of presumed strongyle/hookworm-like eggs. We applied strongyle species identification using nemabiome ITS-2 rDNA amplicon metabarcoding and targeted hookworm beta-tubulin isotype 1 (tubb-1) assays to assess whether samples stored in DESS for 4 and 28 days yielded equivalent results to refrigerated canine faecal samples.
