Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a devastating gastrointestinal disease in preterm neonates. Using an experimental murine model of NEC, we investigated the NEC-associated microbiome changes in wild type mice versus a mouse strain transgenic for IL-37 - a cytokine exhibiting a broad anti-inflammatory spectrum. It also has been demonstrated to protect against NEC. Thus, the data available here contribute towards furthering our understanding of IL-37 associated changes to the microbiome under both normal breast-fed conditions as well as during NEC disease.
