Report: ‘Vegetation: Norderney (1991)»

The knowledge of the actual state and the realisation of the dynamics in vegetation is the basis for a successful nature conservation. This thesis is intended to form a scientific foundation for this applied aspect in particular. Accordingly, the focus of the own studies on the changes in the vegetation in dependence of ecological parameters was placed: creeping and sudden, natural and anthropogenic, Norderney-related or supraregional influences are structured against the background of changing scientific methods and considerations and their relations with vegetation are investigated. On the basis of these guidelines, the three-year study programme (1988 – 1990) was structured as follows: In the first year, a use mapping, the creation of the species list and a large part of plant sociological inventory recording were carried out as completely as possible using the refined brown-blanquet method. In the second year, the focus was on hydrocehmic and hydrophysical studies on 11 waters of the island and the vegetation map was prepared. In the third year, a regional and supraregional comparison could be made through several excursions to the mainland coast and to other islands and soil studies were carried out. Four winters were mainly reserved for the determination of cryptogams, table work and laboratory tests. With the help of the NEUMANN (1949) map, very precise conclusions concerning succession events were derived, compared with previously published succession models and presented as structure-time diagrams under appropriate precautions in interpretation.
