Return of the ID

BACKGROUND Perry's work Return of the Id was selected for the McClelland Sculpture Survey and Award Exhibition, 2014. The exhibition presented works in an outdoor exhibition that highlights the diversity and invention of contemporary sculpture. The work uses materialized time, and investigates how an object can spatially and psychologically divide up time. CONTRIBUTION Return of the Id, contributes to the field of contemporary sculpture at a national level. It continues investigation of some of Western sculpture's key concerns, namely the complex network of relations between the viewer and the object in time and space. It boldly references Freud's symbolic tripartite model of the mind, originally presenting a minimal wedge-shaped exterior which reveals a hidden, more complex interior as the viewer moves around the work, forcing a reconciliation of before and now, here and there, time and space. SIGNIFICANCE Since its inception in 2003, the McClelland Sculpture Survey & Award has been celebrated as the most important biennial outdoor sculpture exhibition in Australia. The 2014 prize was judged by Dr Liz Kreijn, Assistant Director, Collections and Presentation of the Kröller-Müller Museum in the Netherlands, the largest sculptural gardens in Europe. Perry and his work formed a major feature of the accompanying catalogue. Return of the Id was subsequently purchased by prominent Australian architect, John Wardle, and placed on his property at Bruny Island.
