Isolated chloroplasts of the unicellular photosynthetic alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii were cryofixed, freeze-fractured, and surface replicas observed by transmission electron microscopy. This close-up of wildtupe thylakoids shows the contrast in particle size and distribution between stacked and unstacked 'B' fracture planes, and unstacked 'C' planes (center).
