Major depressive disorder (MDD) in children and adolescents is a recurrent and disabling global health condition, yet its pathophysiology remains unclear and effective treatment options are limited. In this study, we sought to identify the metabolic changes specific to MDD in children and adolescents, with the ultimate aim of developing potential biomarkers to aid in the diagnosis and effective treatment of depression in this population. Venous blood samples were collected from enrolled participants, and metabolomic profiling of plasma samples was performed using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) coupled with a quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer (Q-TOF MS) to explore potential biomarkers for pediatric and adolescent MDD. Finally, we compared the metabolomic data from children and adolescents with our previously generated metabolomic dataset of adult MDD to document the shared and distinct metabolic alterations across different age groups.
