Seasonal variation of physical-chemical and phytotoxicological indicators in leached of a sanitary landfill in the semiarid region of Brazil

Abstract The composition of the leached in sanitary landfills is influenced for several factors, including climatic conditions. In this study aimed to analyze the seasonal variation in the composition and toxicity of the leached generated in the Sanitary Landfill located in Campina Grande, semiarid region of Brazil, which was less than 5 years old (young landfill). Sampling consisted of 7 leached collections, in which physicochemical characterization and phytotoxicological analyzes were carried out in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and cabbage (Brassica oleraceae) seeds. In the phytotoxicological assessment, the indicators Relative Root Growth (RRG) and Inhibition of Root Growth (IRG) were analyzed, exposed to three treatments (T1, T5 and T10), in the concentrations from 1%, 5% and 10% of leached. To assess the relationship from precipitation with composition and toxicity of the leached, correlation analysis was used between the variables studied. According to the results, the precipitation influenced the pH reduction, however, for the other physical-chemical indicators (total alkalinity, total ammoniacal nitrogen, chlorides, chemical oxygen demand and volatile solids) and for the phytotoxicological indicators (CRR and ICR ), relationships with precipitation were not obtained. Therefore, the rainfall events determined in this study did not cause changes in the composition and toxicity of the leached.
