Translation (Rita Seng Mai) The title of the story is Wunli Dai Gawng and Katsen Kaw Shawng. Once upon a time, there were two rich families in a village. They were good neighbours. They always treated each other well. One day, the two families were discussing, "We are good neighbours to each other. We always help and treat each other. Our bond must be stronger when it's our grandchildren's age. So, let's make a promise." They decided, "We will let our grandchildren marry." Many years later, a baby girl was born in one family. Her name was Katsen Kaw Shawng. And a baby boy was born in another rich family. His name was Wunli Dai Gawng. Katsen Kaw Shawng was talented in weaving and good at other things when she grew up. She was smart. But Wunli Dai Gawng grew up as a naive boy. There was nothing he was good at. As there was a promise their grandparents had made, their parents arranged a wedding for them. Kaw Shawng's parents didn't like Wunli Dai Gawng because he was stupid and didn't have any skills. So, they didn't want their daughter to marry him. They didn't let her stay at her husband's house. They made their daughter stay at their home. But Wunli Dai Gawng wanted to take his wife to his home. So, he worked at his in-law's house for two years. But there was no sign that his in-law would approve him to take their daughter. He had to go back to his house alone. At home, he considered a lot, "Why don't my parents-in-law let me bring my wife to my house?" He kept thinking and thinking. Then, the reality hit him. He knew that he was such a stupid man and there was nothing he was good at. So, he decided to learn some skills. Then, he asked for 1000 kyats from his parents. His parents didn't agree with him and said, "Don't go anywhere. You didn't even learn when you were young. But now, you are a grown-up man. How can you learn a new skill!?" But he insisted on learning new skills. He went out of his house. On his way, he met a group of people near the ravine. One man from the group said, "No matter how deep the water is, it's useless if there is no fish in it." He heard it and asked the others, "What are you talking about? Teach me, please." They said, "We are just talking, 'No matter how deep the water is, it's useless if there is no fish.' What should we teach you? We have no skill to teach you." Dai Gawng said, "Yes, teach me about that." When they had taught him, he was so grateful and gave three hundred kyats to them. And then, he continued his journey to learn skills. Then, he saw two men standing on each side of the river. A man from one side of the river shouted, "How can two people ride on this small bamboo to cross this river?" He heard them and asked, "What are you talking about? Teach me, please." They looked at him and said, "We didn't say anything. We are discussing how we can ride on this bamboo. We don't have anything to teach you." Dai Gawng said, "Exactly. I haven't heard before. Teach me, please." After learning, he was thankful and gave three hundred kyats to them. And he continued his journey. After walking for a while, he reached a village. He saw a group of people talking on the main road of the village. He heard a man saying, "Tomorrow, we will meet at the office or at the chief's house." So, he said, "My friends, what are you talking about? Teach me, please." They said, "We are not talking about anything special." Dai Gawng said, "Teach me that anyway." After learning, he was thankful and gave three hundred kyats to them again. Then, he went back to his village. When he got back home, he wore nice clothes and went to his wife's house. Kaw Shawng's parents saw him and whispered, "There! That stupid son-in-law comes here again. Since we didn't see him for two or three days, thought he wouldn't come again." While his in-laws were staying in their bedroom, he was sitting in silence in the living room. At that time, they were talking in low tones, "Look at him. What is he going to say this time!?" Kaw Shawng was sitting in the living room near him while she was reeling silk. At that moment, Dai Gawng broke the silence, "No matter how deep the water is, it will be useless if there is no fish."
