Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) above the WHO AQ health limit was attributable to 10,400 premature deaths in Hungary in 2021. This was followed by exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) which caused approximately 1,700 premature deaths. In recent years, the PM2.5 concentration in Budapest – Hungary's capital – surpassed 11 micrograms per cubic meter of air.
