To improve our understanding of the evolutionary mechanisms underlying the changes in plastid genome organization associated with the loss of photosynthesis in free-living Chlamydomonadales, we explored patterns of ptDNA evolution in Polytoma sp. SAG 62-27 (hereafter Hyalomonas oviformis gen. et sp. nov.) and Hyalogonium fusiforme SAG 62-1c (Figure 1B), which represent two distinct and poorly studied nonphotosynthetic lineages within the Chlamydomonadales.
