This 2009 edition represents the 13th iteration of the RECS program. The Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS), first conducted in 1978, is a national sampling survey that collects energy-related data for housing units occupied as primary residences and the households living within them. Data were collected from 12,083 randomly selected households using a complex multistage, area-probability sampling design. The sample is representative of 113.6 million U.S. households, with statistical data for all housing units in 2009 sourced from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS). The CSV data files are accompanied by corresponding "layout files", which contain descriptive labels and formatting specifications for each data variable. The "Variables and Response Codebook" file includes descriptive labels for variables, descriptions of response codes, and indicators for variables used in each final usage model.
