An Archaeological Overview of the Middle Santa Cruz Basin: A Supplemental Class I Cultural Resource Survey for Reach 3 of the Central Arizona Project - Tucson Division

In 1979 the Bureau of Reclamation contracted with the Arizona State Museum for a Class I survey of the Tucson Division of the Central Arizona Project (Westfall 1979). This study covered Reaches 1 and 2 and included Arizona archaeological grid units AA:3, AA:7, AA:8, AA:12, AA:16, and BB:9. Subsequently planning was initiated for a possible Reach 3. The possible extension of the project into three additional grids (AZ BB:13, AZ DD:4, and AZ EE:1) required further archaeological study. This report is designed to supplement the Class I survey report prepared by Westfall (1979). It includes a summary of previous archaeological research and an assessment of known cultural resources in the proposed Reach 3 project area. The detailed discussion of the archaeology of the region presented in Westfall's report is not repeated here, and the reader is referred to that volume for background information.
The predictive model developed by Westfall is utilized to evaluate the cultural resource sensitivity of the expanded project area. Predictions of site distribution should be considered tentative until testing of the model by archaeological survey has been completed. Planning for Reach 3 has not as yet identified the full range of alternatives that will be considered. Consequently, this report does not contain the type of detailed evaluation of specific routes as presented in Westfall's report. Instead, the relative archaeological sensitivity of the environmental zones is discussed and should provide data for the evaluation of how alternate routes for Reach 3 may affect cultural resources.
