The
study was conducted among the patients (using their files) treated in a psychiatry
facility of a teaching hospital (University College Hospital, Ibadan), this is
a psychiatric facility, located in Ibadan, in the south western state of Oyo,
Nigeria. The study is a retrospective study of the 6 years’ details given in
the case notes based on the hospitalized approach to patient care. The Substance Abuse unit of the Psychiatric department of
the University College Hospital is a modified short stay facility of about
maximum of 3 months of rehabilitation (although the duration varies essentially
on patient peculiarities), the admissions to this facility is usually by
family/concerned ones, referrals and walk in(rarely).

There
were some basic questions considered which are in two broad areas Patient
related and Substance use disorders treatment related including: what is the
general prevalence of substance abusers (problematic users), is there a
disproportionate gender imbalance for substance users and abusers, what is the
commoner age of onset of substance use, marital status, highest level of
education, no of admissions, religion, presence or not of insight into the
problem, pattern of abuse, comorbid mental illness, average hospital stay,
problem areas, referral to other mental health practitioners, follow up.
