Quality of life in Townsville, 1976

This survey is the first of a series of biennial surveys concerned with aspects of community life in Townsville conducted by the University. It focused on the city's residents' opinions concerning the city, the neighbourhood, the social services available and the economic situation. Information on the respondents' self-image, leisure activities, attitudes toward education and personal background was also collected. Another area of interest was drug use, in particular, the use of alcohol. Respondents were questioned on their typical and most recent weekend and weekday consumption, the usual source and company for alcohol consumption and their reason for drinking. Attitude statements concerning alcohol, alcoholics, smoking, marijuana and analgesics were included. Background variables included education of household members; occupation of head of household, previous occupation and incidence of unemployment; income of household; country of origin of respondent and parents; age; marital status; religious preference; religiosity and political preference.
