Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae is the etiological agent of contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP), a severe disease that threatens goats and other Caprinae in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Mortality and morbidity rates can reach 60% to 90%, respectively. Chemical mutagenesis using the acridine orange ICR-191 was used to select mutants of M. capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae strain ILRI181 attenuated in virulence. Strains with reduced cytotoxicity have been full genome sequenced to identify the mutations.
