The Prussian Garrison Town after the War of Seven Years Duration (the so called ´Siebenjähriger Krieg´)

The city of Wesel was the biggest Prussian fortress in the west and the most important city in the Duchy of Kleve. But in 18th century the city turned from a relatively important Hanseatic City into a nowadays relatively unimportant lower Rhine city. Central for this development was the Seven Year´s war (1756-1763), in this entire period Wesel was occupied by the French. This is why the end of the seven year´s war is chosen to be the starting point of the analysis. The goal of the study is to show the social and economic structure of the population and its development until the end of the 18th century. Topics: - Development of Wesel´s population (births, marriages, deaths) - Grain process (wheat, rye, barley, buckwheat, oat) in Wesel - Professional groups in Wesel, - Development of trade: Paraphengelder, Akziseaufkommen, Akzisefixierung, - Number of household per populated house - Furthermore: household size, shift, value of houses, property of houses, poll tax, occupations. Die Stadt Wesel war die größte preußische Festung im Westen und die bedeutenste Stadt im Herzogtum Kleve. Das 18. Jh. ist jedoch für die Stadt der Zeitabschnitt, in dem sie sich von einer verhältnismäßig wichtigen Hansestadt zu einer heutzutage verhältnismäßig unwichtigen niederrheinischen Mittelstand verwandelte. Von besonderer Bedeutung für diese Entwicklung ist der Siebenjährige Krieg (1756-1763), in dessen gesamten Verlauf Wesel von französischen Truppen besetzt war. Daher wird in dieser Studie das Ende des Siebenjährigen Krieges als Anfangszeitpunkt für die Analyse gewählt. Ziel der Untersuchung ist es, die Bevölkerung und ihre soziale und wirtschaftliche Struktur und Entwicklung bis zum Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts aufzuzeigen. Themen: - Bevölkerungsentwicklung Wesels (Geburten, Hochzeiten, Todesfälle), - Kornpreise (Weizen, Roggen, Gerste, Buchweizen, Hafer) in Wesel, - Berufsgruppen in Wesel, - Entwicklung des Handels: Paraphengelder, Akziseaufkommen, Akzisefixierung, - Zahl der Haushalte pro bewohntem Haus - außerdem: Haushaltsgröße, Schicht, Hauswerte, Hauseigentum, Kopfsteuer, Berufe.
