Microalgae are a desirable source of renewable biofuels. Experiments to optimize algal biomass productiton in the Southwestern United States were conducted by the Regional algal Feedstock Testbed (RAFT) project. The bacterial members of the phycospheres associated with open pond cultures were characterized by 16S rRNA gene sequencing throughout two season of growth cycles. Dynamic changes in bacterial community structure were associated with time in outdoor cultures and a set of growth parameters including algal health index.
