Our study found that no magnetotactic bacteria were observed inside hadal foraminifera. However, sequences representing approximately 0.13% of the total sequence could be identified as the iron-reducing bacterium Shewanella putrefaciens with a maximum similarity of 100%. Shewanella putrefaciens can reduce hydrated iron oxide from the environment to magnetite and may be involved in iron metabolism in hadal foraminifera.
