Dataset used to explore the cardio-respiratory effects of caffeine ingestion prior to exercise in normobaric hypoxia (~3500 m above sea level) in healthy, active, men and women. Participants completed four experimental trials, comprising all combinations of caffeine/placebo and hypoxia/normoxia, in a pseudo-randomised order. Data included for key participant characteristics, as well as for both submaximal (SM) exercise, and maximal (MAX) exercise. Submaximal exercise data correspond to 60-s averages at the end of a a 10-minute steady-state exercise bout, at an intensity equivalent to 40% (normoxic) maximal aerobic power. Maximal exercise data correspond to a 20-s average prior to volitional exhaustion in a subsequent incremental exercise test.
