Metformin is the fourth most prescribed medication in the world. The drug is commonly used to treat type II diabetes but has also been shown to have anti-cancer and anti-aging properties. Metformin has been detected at substantial levels in rivers and coastal waters and has been label an emerging pollutant. The goal of this research was characterize a metformin-degrading Aminobacter sp. isolated from activated sludge.
