Glacier runoff influences biogeochemistry and resource availability in coastal temperate rainforest streams: Implications for juvenile salmon growth

To assess heterogeneity in stream habitat quality for juvenile salmon in a watershed in the Alaska Coast Mountains, we collected organic matter and invertebrate drift and measured streamwater physical and biogeochemical properties over the main runoff season in two adjacent tributaries, one fed mainly by rain and the other partially by glacier ice/snowmelt. We collected organic matter (i.e. detritus) and invertebrate drift, and measured streamwater physical (temperature, flow, and turbidity) and biogeochemical properties (C, N, and P) during the main runoff season in both streams. We then used bioenergetic modeling to evaluate how temporal patterns in water temperature and invertebrate drift in each tributary influence juvenile salmon growth potential.
为评估阿拉斯加海岸山脉某流域内幼鲑溪流栖息地质量的异质性,我们在主径流季期间对两条相邻支流开展了采样与测定工作:其中一条支流主要以降雨作为补给来源,另一条则部分依赖冰川冰与融雪补给。我们采集了有机质(即有机碎屑)与无脊椎动物漂移样品,并测定了两条支流在主径流季内的水体物理性质(水温、流量与浊度)及生物地球化学性质(碳、氮、磷含量)。随后我们采用生物能量学模型,评估了每条支流的水温和无脊椎动物漂移的时间动态如何影响幼鲑的生长潜力。
